Keeping The Quay Safe: Fire Risk Assessment

From Roman history to modern living fire safety remains just as important.

We recently visited a residential block at The Quay in Exeter to carry out a FRA, helping to ensure that the building’s current fire safety arrangements remain suitable and effective.

A Quay with a Story

Exeter Quay has a fascinating history, dating back to Roman times when the area was

used as a landing site alongside the River Exe.

The Quay later played an important role in Exeter’s connection to the sea. Engineer John Trew built England’s first pound lock canal to bypass the weir, helping to reconnect Exeter with the River Exe and revitalise the city’s historic waterfront.

Today, Exeter Quayside is one of Devon’s most recognisable and historically significant areas, combining historic 17th-century brick buildings and 19th-century industrial warehouses with modern homes, businesses, restaurants and leisure spaces.

And while the buildings and their uses have changed over the centuries, one thing remains important keeping people safe.

Fire Safety in Modern Buildings

For residential buildings, a Fire Risk Assessment is an important part of understanding the fire safety arrangements within the premises and identifying any areas that may require attention.

During our assessment, we look at the building as a whole, considering areas such as:

Means of escape
Emergency lighting
Fire doors and compartmentation
Fire safety management arrangements
Maintenance and testing of fire safety systems

Our aim is to provide a clear, practical assessment that helps the Responsible Person understand the current fire safety arrangements and identify any improvements

that may be required.

Keeping Exeter’s Buildings Safe

Historic buildings and modern developments can each present their own challenges when it comes to fire safety. A good Fire Risk Assessment isn’t simply about ticking a box — it’s about understanding the building, how it is used and the people who may rely on its fire safety measures.

At Core FRA Solutions, we provide practical and proportionate Fire Risk Assessments for residential and commercial premises across Devon and Cornwall.

Whether it’s a historic building with centuries of stories behind it or a modern residential development, our aim remains the same:

Keeping people safe. Protecting property. Supporting Responsible Persons.

Trusted. Compliant. Safe.
