Fire Safety - A visit to Dartington

Everyday is a School day
This week, our work took us to one of Devon's most recognisable landmarks,
Dartington Hall.
Set within a beautiful estate near Totnes, Dartington Hall is best known for its magnificent 14th-century Great Hall and the pioneering Dartington Experiment, established in the 1920s by Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst. Originally built between 1388 and 1400 by John Holand, half-brother to King Richard II, the medieval estate is renowned for its impressive oak hammer-beam roof and distinctive courtyard design. Following its purchase in 1925, the Elmhirsts transformed the neglected estate into a progressive community centred on education, agriculture, forestry, and the arts. A legacy that continues today. The estate remains a thriving centre for education, culture, ecology, and rural regeneration, where historic buildings continue to serve a modern purpose.
Our visit involved carrying out a Fire Risk Assessment within one of the estate's educational buildings. Buildings like these require a practical approach to fire safety, taking into account means of escape, occupancy levels, passive fire protection, and fire safety management.
Some of the most important fire safety measures are the ones you never see. Fire compartmentation, fire stopping, service risers, and ceiling voids all play a vital role in slowing the spread of fire and smoke, protecting escape routes, and giving occupants valuable time to evacuate safely.
At Core FRA Solutions, we provide practical, proportionate fire safety advice to help clients understand their responsibilities, improve safety, and maintain compliance across residential, commercial, educational, and historic buildings.
Every building has its own story. Our role is to help keep the people who use it safe, today and for years to come.
Core FRA Solutions Ltd proudly supports local businesses, managing agents, landlords, and Responsible Persons across Devon and Cornwall, helping them meet their fire
safety responsibilities while protecting people and property.
Trusted. Compliant. Safe.
